Flint Introduces New Ink

With U.S. headquarters in Plymouth, Mich., Flint Group North America Packaging released its newest universal flexo white laminating ink, PolarTek. It is a white ink that can be used over many existing ink systems to deliver very high bond values with all laminating processes, as well as very low retained solvents. PolarTek can thus often replace several other white inks which may have been needed for the varied structures being printed.

Russell Joyce, president of Flint Group Narrow Web, Luxembourg, passed away last December after collapsing in Malmo, Sweden. Joyce began his ink industry career in 1991 with Coates Lorilleux in England. He joined the Narrow Web group of Akzo Nobel Inks (ANI) in 1997, where he held both technical and market development positions.

Flint Group to Acquire Day International

Headquartered in Luxembourg, Flint Group has announced an agreement in principle to acquire Day International, a world leader in the supply of printing blankets, sleeves, image transfer media and pressroom chemicals. Day International will operate as a business unit within Flint Group, and the combined group will rank among the largest pressroom consumable supplier in every region it serves. Dennis Wolters is to remain as CEO of Day International operations. Approximately 8,300 employees will serve customers from 170 sales, service and manufacturing locations on five continents. Rising Costs Affecting Raw Materials for the Print Industry

Due to rising petroleum prices, printers are seeing cost increases in finishing products, inks and substrates. “We are seeing five to seven percent increases,” said Jerry Hill, vice president of sales and marketing, Drytac Corporation. “Almost all the components used to make our overlaminate and adhesive products have risen,” agreed Angela Mohni, director of marketing, Neschen Americas. This includes base film carriers, such as PVC, polyester and polypropylene. “We have seen unprecedented and relentless increases over a period of three years in plastic substrates and adhesive. Money: Flint Group Increases Ink Prices

The North American packaging and sheetfed divisions of Flint Group, Ann Arbor, Mich., is increasing prices on all packaging and commercial inks effective February 1. The company said it will honor its contractual obligations in implementing the increases. Representatives for the company’s sheetfed and packaging division explained that rising costs of raw materials and energy continue to put enormous pressure on the costs of the inks. “Unfortunately, these increases can no longer be mitigated entirely by aggressive supply chain and process improvement initiatives,” commented Susan Kuchta, general manager.
